Club Columbus News

WELCOME TO 2013
Whether you celebrated Chanukah, Christmas, Kwanza, Winter Solstice or all four, the holiday season was an opportunity to give and receive gifts. Hopefully the most important gift was to yourself in the form of self compassion, love and a healthy body. The Club's hope is that you truly embrace the New Year by giving yourself unconditional love and respect.

9 HEALTHY NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS

Control your Portions
Want to downsize your waistline? Start downsizing your dishes. Studies show using smaller plates and bowls promote weight loss.

Be active
Try to inject each day with more activity. Strength training and/or cardiovascular activity for 30 minutes or more should be the goal. Once you have developed the right mindset, the opportunities are endless.

Slash sodium consumption
It is said that Americans consume twice the recommended limit of sodium which is one teaspoon (or 6 grams) daily. Besides contributing to water retention (bloating!!!), sodium can raise blood pressure. Lower sodium diets are linked to decreased risk of heart disease, lower hypertension and weight management.

Increase Antioxidants
During the process of breaking down food, your body produces free radicals. Free radicals are also produced by radiation and cigarette smoking. That's where antioxidants step in. An example would be that once you cut an apple, it begins to brown, but if you dip it in orange juice (which contains vitamin C, an antioxidant), it stays white. You can defend your body the same way by including rich sources in your diet. Pomegranates, coffee and even chocolate contain antioxidants.

Quite Smoking
Quitting smoking may be the hardest habit to break. If you take advantage of today's resources, this could be the year you successfully become a non-smoker. SMOKEFREE.gov is a great website for resources to bookmark.

Floss your teeth
You may not know that bacteria in your mouth can lead to serious problems if you neglect oral health. Your dentist can detect indications of diabetes and heart disease. One simple thing you can do to head off bacteria is floss your teeth..
